How To Find the Right Side Hustle
How are YOU supposed to find the right side hustle?
Life can be overwhelming, especially when you’re trying to decide what you’re “supposed” to be doing, plus how you’re going to use all of the talents and skills you have deep inside. You may even ask yourself how does everyone else sort through so many choices and why does everyone else seems so confident in their decisions about life. After you find a job so you can make ends meet, how do you choose the best side hustle so you don’t feel cash-strapped, bored or pigeonholed? Sure, that one side job sounds great, but does it pay enough to make it worthwhile? Should you do the same work you already do during your 9-5 or should you try something entirely new?
But you don’t have to navigate those waters alone. Working with a coach who can help you figure out where you want to go and which side jobs will help you get there. At the center of every good coach is the ability to help you help yourself.
Here are a few practical steps you can follow to discover your side job calling.
Make a list of your talents.
Is there anything you’re naturally good at? Think back to your childhood and what your natural gifts were. Did you love being around animals? You might enjoy work as a pet sitter or dog walker. Maybe you grew up with a natural gift for writing stories. Monetize that by going into freelance writing. Consider what passions you have that you are not pursuing and play to your strengths. If you’re an extrovert but you work alone all day, look for a job that lets you interact with people. And vice versa for the introverts who work with the public: best look into a job that allows you to work alone.
Make a list of your hobbies.
Do you have any hobbies that you can monetize? If you love painting, consider selling your work or creating an online course that teaches other people how to paint. If you enjoy reading and have a firm grasp of the English language, freelance editing may be for you. The things you already do in your spare time will make the best jobs because you will enjoy doing them. And even if you think there isn’t a market for your hobby, a quick search will likely reveal the opposite is true. There are more people like you out there than you think.
Follow the side hustle money.
Maybe you don’t have any untapped hobbies or talents and just want to make as much money in your spare time as possible. Something as basic as a natural affinity for talking to people or working with numbers can be helpful for many different jobs or side hustles. If there isn’t a specific type of work that you want to do, look for those that pay the most. There are tons of things you could do that would allow you to utilize your natural abilities while earning more cash than the average side hustler.
Use your education and skills.
Maybe you’re someone who loves your day job. If so, go ahead and use those skills in your second job as well. Just because you spend all day working as a financial advisor doesn’t mean you can’t do related work in your spare time as well. Start a blog that informs people about how to start saving for retirement or the best way to invest. (Always check with your employer for rules and regulations regarding non-competes and moonlighting.) If you don’t want to do the exact same thing, look into a side hustle that lets you use adjacent skills. Maybe you work as a copywriter but you’re also a skilled editor. Start a side hustle doing freelance copyediting work and build that skill. Freelancing is such a great way to build new skills or expand on the ones that you have. Rather than being at the mercy of a boss who promises to help you learn new skills but never gets around to it, take charge of your own career goals and work towards something new and exciting in your spare time.
